A Coastal Museum At Badouzi
In addition to the National Palace Museum, there is at least one other museum worth spending a half day or more in northern Taiwan: NMMST, National Museum of Marine Science and Technology. This wonderful sight located right at the Badouzi Peninsula opened in 2014. The museum is right next to the beautiful Port Bisha and Port Badouzi on the west side. Further east, the region connects to the famous Jiu Fen and Chin Kua Shih.
What To Expect
Locating fitting right next to the clear coastal waters, the museum’s main theme is “Ocean”, and uses its various exhibits to demonstrate the relationship between the ocean and our daily life. The museum encompasses an area over 500,000 square meters and is divided into three sections: the Main Exhibition Buildings has architecture in the image of a sailboat while retaining its former power station’s existing foundation and structure. There are a total 8 galleries, each carrying its own theme and exhibitions. They include the Marine Science Gallery, Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering Gallery. There is even a 3D IMAX Theatre, with regular showings for an immersive experience with friends and family. The last building is the Regional Exploration Building, which faces to the port with its rich content of local fishing villages. Generally speaking, the exhibition itself doesn’t include a demonstration of live creatures, but it contains a vast amount of interesting scientific knowledge from fishery to the deep sea. Its interactive design is well-designed.
If you want to know more about Keelung’s harbor culture, then you should not miss the “People and the Sea Gallery.” The Regional Exploration Building is the only free area, and it is a great place to start learning about the fisheries of Keelung. Thanks to the unique seaside scenery surrounding the museum, after a visit indoors you can do some outdoor explorations following a trail. You can head to the nearby Badouzi fishing village, Secret coast –Daping, Wangyou Valley or ChaoJing Park, and one day will be enough to explore the museum and the beautiful coastline of Keelung.
