Keelung culture and the Ghost festival are closely intertwined.
There are three artisan objects that serve as symbols of the Ghost Festival: molded figurines made of rice (midiao), wooden basket lanterns (doudeng), and paper lanterns.
Over time I have been lucky enough to come to know the manufacturer of organic rice dough sculptures, known as midiao.
If you search for “midiao” on the internet, often you will see a grain of rice on which some microscopic characters are engrained. While that is also a form of midiao, these midiao are sculptures shaped as food (fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, bread, cakes, etc.), flowers, insects, animals, and gods. These are the primary subjects of these sculptures. In the past, the dough consisted of rice paste and, in modern times, was replaced by longer-lasting flour.
The midiao are colored and polished and are then used during the various ceremonies during the Ghost Festival as adornments to appease the spirits. When the priest performs the ceremony the midiao are pinned with incense. Then they are placed on a separate table between rows of food for the deceased. Offerings to those who have gone can be seen throughout Keelung the whole year.
After the event, the midiao can be taken as a souvenir. However, they will eventually go bad because they are composed of organic material. You can find good examples of these organic sculptures especially in the Main altar (Zhupu altar) at Zhongzheng Park.
If you visit Keelung during the 15th day of the seventh lunar month, the end of the final celebration at the Main altar in Zhongzheng Park, you can see a myriad of midiao. After the ceremony, they do not need them anymore so visitors are allowed to take some home!

La cultura di Keelung e il Ghost festival sono intrecciati profondamente. Tre sono gli oggetti di produzione artigianale che sono simbolo del Ghost festival: le sagome modellate con la pasta di riso (midiao), le lanterne di legno incise (doudeng) e le lanterne di carta.
Oltre che con il sacerdote taoista, sempre in relazione al Ghost Festival, ho potuto conoscere il produttore di alcune sculture di pasta organica, chiamate midiao.
Se su internet cercate “midiao”, spesso vi apparira’ un chicco di riso sul quale sono state incise dei microscopici caratteri. In realta’ questa parola indica anche questo altro tipo d’arte. Le midiao sono delle sculture a forma di cibo (frutta, verdura, carne, pesce, pane, torte…), di fiori, di insetti e animali, di divinita’. Questi sono i principali soggetti di queste sculture, la cui pasta in passato era costituita da pasta di riso e poi sostituita da un’altra farina vegetale piu’ duratura.
Le midiao sono colorate e lucidate e vengono usate durante i vari “bye bye” e le varie funzioni taoiste riguardanti il Ghost festival come ornamento colorato e gioioso per allietare gli spiriti. Quando il sacerdote celebra la funzione, insieme al cibo e alle bevande presenti sulle tavolate, anche sulle midiao vengono appuntati gli incensi accesi. Vengono quindi poste su un tavolo a parte fra le tavolate piene di cibo all’accoglienza dei defunti. Le offerte per quelli che se ne sono andati sono parte della cultura di Keelung e non solo dei suoi festival.
Dopo la funzione vengono prese dalle persone presenti e portate a casa per ricordo…ad ogni modo dopo qualche tempo andranno in avaria perche’ sono comunque costituite da materiale organico. Potete trovare validi esempi di midiao soprattutto nell’Altare principale (Altare Zhupu) al parco Zhongzheng.
Inoltre, se vi capita di passare per Keelung durante il quindicesimo giorno del settimo mese lunare, esattamente per la celebrazione finale all’Altare Principale sempre al Parco Zhongzheng, potrete non solo osservare una miriade di midiao di ogni genere e la cultura di Keelung al suo picco, ma probabilmente anche portarne una a casa, poiche’ dopo la cerimonia, non servono piu’!
