Karaoke side dishes – James, Marucorner Cafe

posted in: Faces of Keelung, People 0

Keelung is made famous by its buzzing coffee scene. A trip through the city will introduce you to al fresco diners enjoying their cappuccinos, and cozy corners where locals read their books over a pot of specialist coffee. A short walk from the harbour down Xiao'er Rd, you’ll find Marucorner Cafe, a specialist contributor to Keelung’s cafe culture.

The Cafe serves premium pour over coffee from countries like Ethiopia, Guatemala, and Indonesia, alongside select desserts and sandwiches. The coffee is served using esoteric equipment, including temperature controlled kettles and broad-bottomed glass carafes.

You’re guaranteed a unique and perfectly brewed coffee here.

What makes Keelung unique?

Keelung’s uniqueness is that it’s a small city, but it has both mountains and the ocean. When people come from outside and get off the motorway, they immediately see what makes Keelung special. I think it makes Keelung very charming.

What place in Keelung holds special memories for you?

A place with special memories for me is the old forts, because Keelung has many of them. Our family used to live up in the mountains near Haimen Tianxian. That place is very special to me. From up in the hills you could see the sea — not from living right beside it, but from a higher viewpoint. Growing up in Keelung, I think that perspective of seeing the sea from the mountains was something quite unique.

What is something people might not know about Keelung?

Something that everyone must know is that Keelung has a lot of karaoke places. I’ve noticed that in every karaoke bar, the owner will prepare some side dishes to go with the singing and drinking. But every owner makes one particular dish: càipó nén (braised preserved radish with egg). Each place has its own version.

I think it’s quite interesting. You could even go around collecting them and compare which karaoke bar owner makes the best càipó nén.

Where’s the best place to eat in Keelung?

The best place to eat in Keelung, I think, is on the second floor of Ren’ai Market. There are many options—sushi, noodles, and other dishes. It seems like they have everything, even beef noodles. There are lots of delicious foods there, including small snacks.
