Keelung One Day Itinerary

If you ask people to describe Keelung, they’ll likely say it’s a walkable city, that it rains a lot, and that it’s famous for its seafood and night market scene.

Imagine you’ve just arrived: you can smell the salty mist, raindrops splatter on your umbrella, and your stomach is rumbling. You have one day to explore the city and want to make the most of it. Let’s dive into a specially crafted itinerary to slowly discover Keelung on foot while tasting its local delicacies.

Where to start?

For this itinerary, you may want to start at the harbor. Stroll along the maritime plaza to soak in the atmosphere of the city, with fishing boats coming and going and the sea always within sight. Look up and you’ll spot eagles circling above the water, patiently waiting to catch their prey. If you feel like starting the day with a drink in hand, Hechalou (鶴茶樓) is a great choice nearby, known for its refined bubble teas. Bubble tea is a must try when you’re in Taiwan! If you want to learn how to order one, check this article: How to Order Bubble Tea in Taiwan.

Harbor Air and Morning Rituals

Now, it’s time for a typical Taiwanese breakfast at 魯平豆漿店. No better way to start the day than with a famous Taiwanese egg crepe and a cup of warm soy milk.

After that, take a short walk and step into Qing’an Temple, one of the oldest temples in Keelung and an important place of worship dedicated to Mazu, the goddess of the sea. The contrast between the busy streets outside and the calm, incense-filled interior is striking. If you want to learn more about its history, read our guide to Qing’an Temple.

From there, walk uphill to Khóo Tsú-song Old Mansion (許梓桑古厝). This lesser-known spot offers a lovely view over the city and harbor. You can also admire the ruins of this old mansion slowly being reclaimed by plants, giving it an aerie atmosphere. It’s a nice pause away from the bustle below and a great place to take a few photos.

A Taste of Everyday Keelung for Lunch

Once you’re back down, head to Ren’ai Market for lunch. Be prepared for a lively atmosphere filled with locals chatting, cooking, and lining up for their favorite stalls. This is everyday Keelung at its best. Wander around before choosing where to eat, but if you want a reliable option, grab a bowl of seafood soup, curry noodles or fresh sushi and sashimi from one of the long-standing vendors on the upper floors. And if you want some help to get around this busy market, explore our Ren’ai Market food guide!

If you still have room for dessert, why not try a famous warm wheel cake (車輪餅) at 輪の鋪紅豆餅.

From then, take a gentle walk toward the Keelung Cultural Center. The museum regularly hosts contemporary exhibitions and is worth a stop, even if just for a short visit. Afterward, treat yourself to a coffee at Dreamers Coffee Roasters, conveniently located inside the building— a perfect place to rest and recharge.

Afternoon: Culture and Panoramic Views

In the afternoon, make your way to Keelung Tower. Take the elevator up to enjoy a sweeping view of the city, the harbor, and the surrounding hills. From there, admire the impressive Zhupu Altar, then continue on foot toward the Guanyin Statue and the Big Buddha Temple. After that, you can either head back down by following the scenic Circle Path, or, if you still have energy, you can extend the walk all the way to Ershawan Fort (Military Park) to soak in the old military atmosphere of Keelung and enjoy a nice view of the container port, Heping Island and Keelung Islet.

As evening falls, head to Miaokou Night Market — it’s time to get lost among the countless food stalls and glowing signs. Don’t miss Keelung classics like crab soup, nutritious sandwich and oyster omelet to end the day. For those who have a sweet tooth, try the peanut butter turnover pancake!

Your One-Day Keelung Itinerary

Keelung offers something distinct from other Taiwanese cities: a rhythm that invites you to slow down. Its compact, walkable center makes it easy to explore on foot, encouraging you to wander, observe, and take in the city as it unfolds around you. While a single day can’t capture all of Keelung’s beautiful surroundings, it is more than enough to experience the heart of the city—strolling between the harbor, local streets, and viewpoints, and stopping along the way to enjoy its unforgettable food.
